It is when people are not aware of God's presence everywhere
That they must seek God by special methods
and special practices.
Such people have not attained God.
To all outward appearances
persons who continue properly in their pious practices
are holy.
Inwardly, however,
they are asses.
For they know about God
but do not know God.

I've always thought that since the beginning, God has been 'written' on our hearts, and it's up to us to listen. It's the quiet times when I'm amongst nature that I hear that still small voice the best. thank you for the beautiful photo! :)
Wow. That quote rocks! May I ask where you got it? I've seen a lot of Meister Eckhart excerpted here and there across the years, but not that one.
Thank you, Lucy.
Another lovely photo Lucy and a timely quote.
Seems to me as little children we all know God, but many lose sight of the divine as we learn the ways of the world. Returning to love (agape) leads us back to the path ... listening within and trusting the messages we receive takes willingness and practice. :)
Hugs and blessings,
It's so important that we open ourselves to the mystical. Knowing "about" - there's no intimacy, no union. Let us taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
Hello Lucy-
Thank you for all of your loving support - a 'holy' one you are. I like this quote, as there is so much truth in it. For me, I just need to "keep on keepin' on" and not get too rowdy in my judgement of others. I have found that sometimes those who put on the show, but have no seemingly real connection, teach me valuable lessons. And often, something will happen in life to let them know, in no uncertain terms, that their way of doing business needs to change. Miracles. I saw this very happening yesterday at a meeting, where a woman spoke of being brought to her knees. What I do know is that I am committed to improving my conscious contact, trying to do the next right thing, since I myself am not perfect. I am grateful to LIVE in THE LIGHT.
wow! so many wonderful thoughts and comments on this 'little' quote. i love the references to God being written on our hearts and those places of childlike wonder where we can hear that still small voice.
gabrielle--you have named it well with "Knowing "about" - there's no intimacy, no union." that feels simply like knowledge vs. knowing.
dream--i hope i have not been seen as one of the 'holy' ones in the quote...with my pious practices...yikes...that is certainly not my intent :-(
the quote is from the book "Meditations with Meister Eckhart--a centering book by Matthew Fox."
i first read it in graduate school and was immediately drawn to seeing the presence of God everywhere. i also wrote a smiley face next to the part about 'asses', because it just amused me to think of a 13th century mystic saying that :-)
